NOTE

Not every industrial network is designed for the same requirement

Traditional fieldbus systems such as PROFIBUS, CANopen and DeviceNet have been used to connect field devices for many years. Industrial Ethernet solutions such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and EtherCAT can offer higher bandwidth and modern IT/OT integration.

Real-time performance

Cycle time and deterministic behavior can be critical in motion and synchronization applications. Select the protocol together with the controller, drive and I/O architecture.

Cabling and topology

An Ethernet-based network does not mean that office cabling is suitable for every industrial application. Select shielding, resistance to repeated movement, connectors, IP rating and EMC characteristics according to site conditions.

Migration projects

When migrating from an older fieldbus system to a new network, plan gateway use, I/O mapping, device profiles and software changes.

Application note

This article provides general technical information. For product selection and safety-critical applications, the exact model, manufacturer documentation and actual operating conditions should be verified separately.
