How should we assess a cycle advancing before the part is in place?
If a missing or incorrectly positioned metal part advances through an assembly fixture, quality inspection and rework may be required. The solution discussed here is a proposed engineering approach for incorporating metal target presence information into the machine’s production control. It is not presented as a completed Automation project or a guaranteed error-prevention system.
The product’s role and limits
Balluff BES0068 is a sensor candidate that provides a PNP NO switching signal when it detects a suitable metal target within the specified sensing range. That information alone does not prove that every part dimension is correct, that the correct part has been fitted or that the joining operation has been completed. The sensor is one component of the defined checkpoint; its meaning comes from the fixture design, control software and acceptance logic together. [S1–S2]
What information do we collect first during assessment?
Record the part material, target surface, positioning tolerances in the fixture, distances in empty and occupied states, and accessible mounting space. On the control side, assess the input configuration, how long the signal will be present and the cycle steps. Separately consider the possibility of swarf or another metal fixture element being detected as the target. Missing-part, incorrect-orientation and wrong-part scenarios are different; define a separate validation criterion for each.
A scope that can accompany product sales
For an agreed project, the sensor and suitable connection products, assessment of the mounting approach, PLC input matching, production signal logic and controlled function trials can be quoted together. Requirements for mounting bracket design, PLC software changes and on-site commissioning are stated separately. If the existing fixture or program needs modification, these tasks are not hidden in the product price; they are described as technical scope and separate work items.
Define acceptance testing by the required outcome
The proposed acceptance scope covers detecting the correct target in permitted positions, avoiding unexpected detection with an empty fixture, capturing the signal in the control system at the relevant cycle step, and providing an appropriate production notification to the operator if a fault or missing data occurs. Define part samples, the tolerance range and test repetitions before work begins. No zero-defect outcome or specific savings percentage is promised for a result that has not been achieved on site.
Alternatives and maintenance
Consider different sensing principles if the target is not metal, the task requires discrimination between very closely spaced positions, or several characteristics must be checked. When replacing a product, similarity in “M12 and 4 mm” is not sufficient; assess the frequency and IP differences in the BES060U/BES060R examples against the application requirements. The delivery scope may include the complete code, cable type, settings and position record, and approved spare part information for maintenance. [S3–S4]

Frequently asked questions
Can one sensor prove that the whole part is correctly positioned?
No. One inductive sensing point provides information only about the target region it detects. Distinguishing a wrong part, missing component or incorrect orientation may require an additional sensor, mechanical verification or a different sensing method.
Is BES0068 recommended for every fixture?
No. It is a candidate if the metal target, suitable sensing range, mounting and PNP NO input conditions are met. The approach on this page is an engineering scenario requiring assessment and testing.
Does this solution replace machine safety?
No. Production presence and position detection are separate from personnel safety. Without an appropriate safety system, a standard inductive sensor signal cannot replace a guard-door or personnel-protection function.
What information should we send for a quotation?
Share a fixture photograph or drawing, target part material, position tolerance, expected cycle, control system and acceptance conditions. The required products and engineering scope are defined from these data.
Can the existing control system be retained?
This is determined by a compatibility assessment. Direct operation with the existing PLC is not promised before evaluating PNP input compatibility, power supply, signal duration, filtering and program logic.
